If you haven’t heard, there is yet another dating service that has come online recently. The new website called DownToEarth, is brought to you from the the company of Match.com.

The goal of the site is to create a dating service that provides quality and honest results. They accomplish this task by using their “RealRatings” System. This system allows users to rank the accuracy of what you say in your profile. For example, you go on a date with someone, and you say you’re a model, but you’re not, now the person has an opportunity to give their opinion of you on the site. It sounds like an interesting way to keep user’s egos in line.

Hopefully the system can not be gamed by people who decide to either improve their own ranking, or try to discredit someone else’s. The system reminds me a bit of how digg.com works; you either like a posting and digg it up, or you bury because it’s bad. Digg’s system has been know to be manipulated on several occassions by enterprising individuals and companies looking to improve traffic to their own sites by gaming the system. Hopefully DownToEarth has safe guards in place to prevent this.

Another thing to mention is, how will this play out against Match’s own website, match.com? Will some users leave the monthly-fee website to go to the free service? It’s a little too early to say. Usually some will try out a free service, but unless there’s enough potential dates in the area, it may not hold their attention long enough. For now, we will have to wait and see.
