“Hooking Up” is more common than Traditional Dating
An article on cbsnews talks about students on college campuses are more likely to “Hook Up” than do more traditional dating. Kathleen Bogle, author of Hooking Up: Sex, Dating, and Relationships on Campus, goes into details about what “Hooking Up” means, and the implications it has on students during their high school and college years and what happens when they leave college.”Hooking Up” doesn’t have the meaning most people think of as “just sex”. The term has become more vague in definition and can me a broad range of possibilities, from kissing, to foreplay to sexual intercourse, but it may not be all those things, and could just be one or two of them.
According to a number of interviews she conducted with students, she says that students are “sampling” more during their high school and college years, not really commiting to relationships, but at least experimenting during this time. As a result, they are delaying marriage, but do enter more of a traditional dating relationship when they leave college.
I personally think some of the factors that are involved are the pressures of schools, allowing yourself time to develop as a person and getting to know what you want in life, and what you want from a partner. Hopefully this will lead to better longer lasting relationships.
